Students must have completed higher education studies in the required field and hold a second-cycle degree, an integrated second-cycle degree, or a degree under the former DIND system.
A grade point average above 8 in both first- and second-cycle studies, with exceptions possible for special cases assessed by the relevant committees for awarding the academic degree “Doctor.”
Proof of proficiency in at least the English language at B2 level, in accordance with the legislation in force.
Recommendations from individuals holding an academic title who are familiar with the candidate’s academic and professional abilities.
Demonstration and adherence to the highest scientific and ethical standards throughout the entire research period and beyond.

University Metropolitan Tirana conducts scientific research and fosters the development of young researchers through doctoral programs focused on innovation, academic excellence, and the challenges of the future. The Doctoral Schools provide a modern and international environment where doctoral students conduct independent research, engage in scientific projects and publications, and collaborate with researchers and partner institutions in Albania and abroad. Collaborations with universities and research centers in Europe and the United States create opportunities for academic mobility, joint projects, co-supervision, and, subject to the respective agreements, joint or dual degrees. Through these programs, UMT aims to contribute to the development of a new generation of researchers and experts by connecting scientific research with innovation and the needs of society, the economy, and industry.
At University Metropolitan Tirana (UMT), since December 2021, the university has been licensed by the Ministry of Education and Sports to offer a doctoral program in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems (AI & SI). This program has been developed based on the academic and scientific expertise of UMT’s staff, as well as through collaboration with Albanian, regional, European, and American higher education and research institutions.
The Doctoral School aims to create a modern and international research environment focused on the development of intelligent technologies, innovation, and the transfer of knowledge across various sectors of the economy and society. The program supports the advancement of cutting-edge scientific research and the integration of doctoral students into international academic and professional networks.
Duration: 3–4 years for international doctoral studies and 3–5 years for national doctoral studies.
Language: Admission requirement: English language proficiency at B2 level.
Tuition Fee: Tuition is free of charge, and doctoral students receive a net monthly scholarship of €800.
Funding and Doctoral Student Status: The program is funded by University Metropolitan Tirana, national and international funding programs, including the French Embassy in Tirana, as well as various academic mobility and cooperation initiatives. The standard duration of doctoral studies is three years, during which doctoral students conduct intensive research activities at UMT and at international partner institutions. The program aims to prepare highly qualified researchers and professionals capable of contributing to the development of artificial intelligence and intelligent systems at the academic, industrial, and societal levels.
