DOCTORAL SCHOOL

Faculty of Computer Science and IT

The third-cycle program in Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems is offered by the Faculty of Computer Science and IT at University Metropolitan Tirana (UMT) and aims to educate researchers and experts capable of contributing to scientific, technological, and innovative development in the field of artificial intelligence and intelligent systems.

PhD School in Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems

The Faculty of Computer Science and IT (FSHKIT) at University Metropolitan Tirana (UMT), since December 2021, has been licensed by the Ministry of Education and Sports to offer the doctoral program in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems (AI & SI). This program is built upon the academic and scientific experience of UMT staff, as well as collaboration with Albanian, regional, European, and American higher education and scientific research institutions. The Doctoral School aims to create a modern and international research environment focused on the development of intelligent technologies, innovation, and knowledge transfer across various sectors of the economy and society. The program supports the advancement of high-level scientific research and the integration of doctoral candidates into international academic and professional networks.

Program Objectives

The doctoral program aims to deepen theoretical knowledge and develop research competencies in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems. Doctoral studies are based on independent scientific research and creative academic activity, creating the conditions for the preparation of a doctoral thesis (dissertation), which is required for obtaining the scientific degree of “Doctor.” Through this program, doctoral candidates are equipped to conduct advanced scientific research, propose innovative solutions, and contribute to the development of intelligent technologies at both national and international levels. The program integrates the theoretical, experimental, and applied aspects of artificial intelligence, with a focus on developing intelligent methods and systems oriented toward real-world challenges.

Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems

Candidates enrolled in the doctoral program will have the opportunity to conduct their research activities with the support of colleagues from Université Gustave Eiffel (Paris), INSA Grenoble, École Centrale-Supélec / CNRS, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The program has a duration of three to four academic years. Candidates will be employed full-time at University Metropolitan Tirana, and the tuition fee will be fully covered by the research project for a three-year period.

Program and Academic Structure

The Doctoral Program in Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems is designed as an elite research-oriented program aimed at preparing high-level researchers and experts in the most advanced areas of artificial intelligence, data science, and intelligent systems. The program admits candidates with outstanding academic achievements and strong research potential who have completed their university studies in fields related to computer science, mathematics, mathematical physics, automation, engineering, economics, or other related fields. The Doctoral School aims to attract outstanding students, graduates not only of Metropolitan University of Tirana but also of leading Albanian universities and prestigious European universities. Candidate selection is based on academic excellence, achievements during Bachelor’s and Master’s studies, analytical skills, and motivation to engage in advanced scientific research. Studies are organized around individual research plans and are conducted in an academic environment that promotes scientific autonomy, critical thinking, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Doctoral candidates actively participate in scientific seminars, academic publications, research projects, and international mobility activities, gradually integrating into the international research community in the field of artificial intelligence and intelligent systems.

International Collaboration and Scientific Supervision

An important component of the program is its international dimension. The program is developed in collaboration with partner universities and research centers in Europe and the United States of America, including French, Italian, and American universities. These collaborations create opportunities for co-supervision of doctoral studies, the development of joint research projects, and the completion of double or joint degrees. Doctoral candidates have the opportunity to conduct part of their research activities at international partner institutions, becoming integrated into advanced research laboratories and academic networks. Academic supervisors and international co-supervisors are engaged in providing scientific support to doctoral candidates and guiding them toward research with high national and international impact.
