PhD School in Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems
The Faculty of Computer Science and IT (FSHKIT) at University Metropolitan Tirana (UMT), since December 2021, has been licensed by the Ministry of Education and Sports to offer the doctoral program in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems (AI & SI). This program is built upon the academic and scientific experience of UMT staff, as well as collaboration with Albanian, regional, European, and American higher education and scientific research institutions.
The Doctoral School aims to create a modern and international research environment focused on the development of intelligent technologies, innovation, and knowledge transfer across various sectors of the economy and society. The program supports the advancement of high-level scientific research and the integration of doctoral candidates into international academic and professional networks.
Program Objectives
The doctoral program aims to deepen theoretical knowledge and develop research competencies in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems. Doctoral studies are based on independent scientific research and academic creative activity, creating the necessary conditions for the preparation of the doctoral thesis (dissertation), required for obtaining the scientific degree of “Doctor.”
Through this program, doctoral candidates are trained to conduct advanced scientific research, propose innovative solutions, and contribute to the development of intelligent technologies at both national and international levels. The program integrates the theoretical, experimental, and applied aspects of artificial intelligence, with a strong focus on developing intelligent methods and systems oriented toward real-world problems.

Academic Program and Structure
he doctoral program in Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems is designed as an elite research-oriented program aimed at preparing high-level researchers and experts in the most advanced fields of artificial intelligence, data science, and intelligent systems. The program admits candidates with outstanding academic performance and strong research potential, who have completed their university studies in fields related to computer science, mathematics, mathematical physics, automation, engineering, economics, or other related disciplines. The Doctoral School aims to attract the most distinguished students, not only graduates of the University Metropolitan Tirana, but also those from leading Albanian universities and prestigious European institutions. Candidate selection is based on academic excellence, results achieved during Bachelor’s and Master’s studies, analytical skills, and motivation to engage in advanced scientific research.
Studies are organized through individual research plans and take place in an academic environment that promotes scientific autonomy, critical thinking, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Doctoral candidates are actively involved in scientific seminars, academic publications, research projects, and international mobility activities, gradually integrating into the international scientific research community in the field of artificial intelligence and intelligent systems.
International Cooperation Academic Supervision
Esteemed professors will be involved both within the doctoral program framework and in the development of joint doctoral topics in collaboration with several French universities, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC-USA), and University Metropolitan Tirana (UMT). Doctoral studies will primarily be conducted within a co-supervision and co-enrollment framework with partner foreign institutions, allowing doctoral candidates to obtain a double degree from UMT and from the partner French university or UTC-USA. Funding will be fully provided by UMT, as well as through doctoral mobility and exchange programs supported by the French Embassy and other French and European organizations. The status of doctoral candidates admitted to the Doctoral School in AI & Intelligent Systems will be equivalent to that of Assistant Professors at UMT, with corresponding remuneration. The duration of studies is normally three years, of which at least 12 months must be spent at one of the partner institutions.
