University Metropolitan Tirana, in collaboration with the Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (IZIIS) from North Macedonia, successfully organized the certification ceremony for the first edition of the professional course “Shake It Up”. This specialized program aims to equip young engineers and industry professionals with advanced knowledge on the impact of earthquakes on infrastructure and the latest methods for designing and constructing safe buildings
A crucial program for a seismically active region
The Balkan region is characterized by high seismic activity, making Earthquake Engineering a vital field to ensure the resilience and safety of structures. Studies show that a lack of expertise in this field can lead to catastrophic consequences in the event of powerful earthquakes, as seen in several recent cases in the region. For this reason, UMT and IZIIS joined forces to offer this innovative course, aiming to strengthen the technical capacities of Albanian and regional engineers.
Throughout the program, participants gained advanced knowledge in:
Seismic risk analysis and the impact of earthquakes on buildings and infrastructure. Structural design and reinforcement according to the latest international standards. Application of advanced technologies for testing buildings against earthquakes. Practical simulations and case studies of earthquake-damaged structures.
24 Certified Engineers – A new generation of earthquake engineering experts
Following an intensive training program, 24 students and professionals from the fields of civil engineering, architecture, and related disciplines successfully obtained their certifications. This marks an important step toward developing a new generation of experts ready to apply their knowledge in real-world construction projects.
During the certification ceremony, the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at UMT emphasized the significance of this program and its impact on the future of the construction sector:
