University Metropolitan Tirana has joined a transformative international initiative titled “Technical Medicine Education for Personalized 3D (TechMed3D)”, which sets out to modernize the intersection of healthcare and technology in higher education. With a total project fund of €666,300.77 and a duration of 36 months, this Erasmus+ Capacity Building project brings together top institutions from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the European Union.

TechMed3D aims to respond to the critical lack of interdisciplinary medical technology education and the underdeveloped use of 3D printing in patient care. UMT will play a leading role in introducing new academic curricula in Technical Medicine, while promoting research, innovation, and student engagement in this rapidly evolving field.
One of the most innovative features of the project is the design and production of personalized 3D-printed breast prostheses, providing new hope for post-mastectomy patients. This approach is not only innovative but also patient-centered, aiming to achieve an 80% satisfaction rate among recipients.
Other core project activities include:
- Training of 10 academic and technical staff in cutting-edge medical technology;
- Enrolling at least 50 students per institution in the new curriculum;
- Establishing the TechMed3D Cluster, a platform that connects academia with the medical industry to foster sustainable collaboration;
- Integrating key EU priorities such as the Green Deal, the Global Gateway Strategy, and the European Research Area, ensuring that the project aligns with Europe’s most important innovation and sustainability goals.
At UMT, the project aligns directly with the university’s strategic mission to become a technology-driven institution with a strong focus on applied science, health innovation, and entrepreneurship. The TechMed3D project is expected to support the creation of a spin-off startup, offering real-world solutions in the field of biomedical engineering and boosting employability for graduates.
As one of the key Albanian partners, UMT is proud to contribute to this innovative leap forward, reinforcing its commitment to bridging the gap between engineering, medicine, and the personalized healthcare of tomorrow.
