After extensive market research, UMT is proud to offer this globally relevant new 2-year multidisciplinary MSc programme in English. The programme is in the general field of “Electrical and Electronic Engineering”, also covering parts of “Computer Engineering”, “Information and Communication Technologies” (ICT) as well as “Business Informatics”. The MSc in “Renewable Energy and Management” is the outcome of the deliverable for the EU funded academic training project after consultation with the 13 primarily Balkan university partners, along with Greece, Spain, Czechia and Croatia, titled, “New Energy Competence System and Technology for Western Balkan Energy Stability System Curriculum Reform”, Project No.: 101129321 (Call: ERASMUS-EDU-2023-CBHE). This programme also incorporates EU best practices and aligns with the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, which supports educational initiatives in sustainable energy. Fig. 1, below shows the complete plan of the programme delivery.
The MSc programme addresses these ESCO (European Skills, Competences, and Occupations/Energy Service Companies) competencies and industrial professions, as shown in Fig. 2. The new MSc in Renewable Energy and Management has a final semester component of an industrial internship placement with renewable energy companies in Albania. Furthermore, collaborating with our 13 partner Balkan and other European universities and research institutions will enhance the quality of education and provide students with exchange opportunities and real world practical work experiences. The establishment of a new Master of Science in Renewable Energy and Management in Albania is not only a response to the urgent need for a skilled workforce but also a strategic move towards sustainable economic development for Albania, the Balkans and the world. Registration for the programme will start in September 2025 with lectures starting in October 2025.

The Master of Science in “Renewable Energy and Management” study programme, offered by University Metropolitan Tirana, aims to equip students with in depth knowledge of modern clean energy production technologies and their sustainable management in line with national and international objectives for green development. In particular, this programme focuses on the technical aspects of renewable energy systems such as solar, wind, hydropower, tidal and geothermal resources, as well as their economic, environmental, legal and managerial dimensions.
At the end of the programme, students will be able to analyse, design and manage energy projects, understand energy markets and the impact of public policies, and apply innovative solutions through new technologies.
The curriculum is built in accordance with European best practices, including: strong laboratory components, technical training and practical studies.
In addition to the knowledge acquired during the academic semesters, students will also develop practical skills through the professional internship programme and the preparation of their diploma thesis, having the opportunity to be involved in real projects in collaboration with industry and public institutions.
The “Renewable Energy and Management” programme is the result of an academic development project that aims to promote quality higher education in line with the country’s strategic priorities for clean energy and sustainable development. This programme has been conceived and developed as a response to the need for qualified professionals in the field of renewable energy, aiming to create a new academic and professional profile in the Albanian university system. The creation of the programme is a direct result of the institution’s involvement in the NEST4WB – New Curricula in Energy Sustainability for Western Balkans project, supported by the European Union under the
Erasmus+ programme. This project aims to develop and improve university curricula in the Western Balkan countries through building institutional and academic capacities in the field of energy sustainability.
During the development process, the following were carried out:
- Detailed labour market analyses, to identify current and future needs for professionals in the field of renewable energy;
- Extensive consultations with experts from the public and private sectors, to ensure the practical relevance of the curriculum;
- International workshops and study visits, developed within the framework of the NEST4WB project, which have contributed to the integration of best practices from European partner universities;
- Transfer of experience and know-how from universities with consolidated experience in clean energy and environmental management programs;
- Training for academic staff, aimed at improving teaching methodology and integrating modern technologies into the learning process.
The programme is built in accordance with the Bologna framework and respects the standards of the Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ASCAL), ensuring transparency, assessment of learning outcomes and transferability of credits (ECTS)
Graduates of the Master of Science program in “Renewable Energies and Management” at University Metropolitan Tirana can work in a wide range of sectors, not only in companies operating directly in the production and distribution of renewable energy a sector in constant growth in the domestic and international market but also in institutions such as: energy and environmental consulting companies, energy regulatory authorities, municipalities and public institutions that draft or implement policies for sustainable development, as well as in various industries that require efficient management of energy and natural resources. Another option that is experiencing rapid development is self-employment or engagement in independent projects (freelancing), where graduates can provide consulting services in the areas of energy analysis, efficiency management, implementation of renewable energy systems or their integration into existing buildings and systems. Also, many young people with innovative ideas in the field of energy are creating their own startups, which have begun to receive attention and financial support from domestic and international funds, turning the clean energy sector into an attractive point for green entrepreneurship.
