Enhancing English Proficiency Across Disciplines at University Metropolitan Tirana

For the seventh consecutive year, the University Metropolitan Tirana hosted its highly anticipated workshop, organized by the Dean of Students, Dr. Sonila Daiu.

This year’s workshop aimed to elevate the role of English language proficiency in academic and professional contexts, addressing the unique linguistic demands of each of UMT’s three faculties. By equipping students with advanced communication skills tailored to their fields of study, the workshop reinforced UMT’s vision of preparing graduates to excel in an increasingly globalized and interdisciplinary world.

Reflecting on the integration of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) into UMT’s academic programs, Dr. Sonila Daiu added:

The segment for the Faculty of Computer and IT explored the role of English in technology, emphasizing its importance in coding, software development, and digital communication. Students learned how mastering technical English enables them to engage with global innovations, understand cutting-edge research, and collaborate effectively in international IT environments. This session highlighted the necessity of clear, precise communication in a field that thrives on problem-solving and collaboration.

English for Business and Economics: Faculty of Economics

The Faculty of Economics segment focused on the application of English in business and financial contexts. Participants gained insights into how English is used in global trade, economic policy discussions, and entrepreneurial ventures. This part of the workshop addressed practical skills such as writing business reports, presenting financial analyses, and navigating cross-border negotiations. It underscored the importance of language as a tool for accessing international markets and fostering economic partnerships.

English for Design and Urban Development: Faculty of Architecture and Engineering

The session for the Faculty of Architecture and Engineering examined the critical role of English in design and urban planning. Students explored technical vocabulary, academic writing, and research presentation skills that are essential in architecture and civil engineering. The workshop emphasized the value of English in communicating innovative ideas, engaging with international projects, and contributing to sustainable urban development on a global scale.

The workshop concluded with a special awards ceremony, celebrating the dedication and achievements of participants. 

The ERASMUS+ Certificate of Excellence was awarded to the first-place winner, recognizing their outstanding efforts in applying English proficiency to their academic pursuits. This prestigious accolade reflects UMT’s commitment to rewarding excellence and encouraging students to strive for success.
